This walking tour of the city of Madrid seeks to reveal the historical traces of African and Afro-descendant presence in Madrid, including:
The history of slavery in Madrid, the African presence in the Iberian Peninsula, the Moorish legacy in Madrid, and the effects and consequences of colonization. It explores how enslaved people and the Black diaspora have contributed to the urban, cultural, and social fabric of Madrid.
The tour goes beyond colonial times, from pre-Columbian history to the present day, highlighting continuity, change, and resistance. It showcases emblematic locations in Madrid where it is still possible to observe physical and symbolic traces of the slave trade and African heritage.
This is not just a tourist experience, but an educational and reflective walking tour, designed to bring to light hidden histories that are often excluded from conventional tours in Madrid.
Meeting Location: Plaza de Isabel II, outside Starbucks at the Opera House, Ópera Metro Station.

INCREDIBLE TOUR!!
What an amazing morning we spent with Kwame. He provided a fair, balanced, nuanced, and insightful look into the contributions and influences of blacks in Spain. Kwame‘s knowledge of the history was impressive. Even more impressive was his willingness to engage with us and discuss how Spain’s black history is “hidden in plain sight.“ of all our experiences during our vacation in Spain, this is a clear highlight.
No matter what else you plan to do while in Spain, add this to your itinerary-do it now!
I really enjoyed this tour! Our tour guide was so kind and knowledgeable about Madrid and Spain. I feel like I learned so much about this part of the black diaspora and I encourage everyone to take this tour when visiting Madrid!
I booked this tour for my mother and I, we both learned so much. Kwame was so knowledgeable and thorough. As an American, Black history is already limited in our education system--much less Black world history. It was eye-opening and provided roots to the colonial reality of the world as we know it. Excellent. Would and will recommend it to all!
Thanks Carla for the kind words. All tha best
Kwame,
Thanks for a highly informative tour. One of the highlights from my short time in Madrid. Looking forward to coming back for your other tour. Until next time, be well and keep up the great work!
